Album Info:It was a most unusual thing that day, when the local came to a stop in front of our house, and then backed west over the ctc switch into the siding at Bangor East. It seemed to me that perhaps the dispatcher could NOT give the Soo / CP local enough time on the single track main at Sparta to do their work. So the crew took a break for a late lunch as they sat on the east end of the Bangor siding at Rockland. After one west and one east had passed they followed a BNSF coal loads. It was getting dark when they finally left and I headed home.

After the traffic clears
Title:  After the traffic clears
Description:  The eastbound Soo/ CP local waits in the clear, having a "late lunch" while waiting for other traffic to pass. This was because there was probably not enough time for them to tie up main line at Sparta while doing their local work! So ok Mister Dispatcher, I guess we'll just sit here on the siding and watch the parade go by, while we have lunch! It works for us! In fact if you don't mind, we'll be a short distance down the street getting something to eat!

After the traffic clears
Title:  After the traffic clears
Description:  And so there the train sat, waiting in the clear. The leaving signal remained red because the switch was against them. I like these ctc signals. Perhaps I was not sure about them "in the beginning" as they are a "little bit" different! Notice the signals are controlled and interlinked by mircowave radio. You can see the directional antenna on top of the pole beside the signal house. Perhaps there is more going on in this picture than someone might first think or see! All it takes to see these things is a little understanding, and a little bit of time spent to look and then to see!

After the traffic clears
Title:  After the traffic clears
Description:  On different days the power consist can be and often times is different! But after a while, you can look at the train and see that there is another car of heavy timber for the tie plant and behind the blue DM&E gons is some more lumber for Sparta! It is fun when you begin to know and see these things! If for no other reason, than to know in which direction and where you should go to take get that next picture!

After the traffic clears
Title:  After the traffic clears
Description:  As I was getting tired of waiting, I headed back home as we live across the street from mp263. And then sure enough, here comes a westbound! By the way, No the American flag is NOT mounted on the engine as it might first seem, but it is in the yard behind the fence! Nice picture, eh?! For sure or at least I think so!

After the traffic clears
Title:  After the traffic clears
Description:  And so in the short time that it took the westbound train to pass, there I was back at the "County Road J" crossing and at the east end of the Bangor siding in the small village commonly called Rockland. It was a very short walk down the old CNW right of way, which is now a state trail used by hikers, bicycles and snow mobiles. This trail is 101 miles long and is divided into four parts. The part in front of our house is called the La Crosse River trail as this river is about a half mile to the north.

After the traffic clears
Title:  After the traffic clears
Description:  The past and the present! The Old Milwaukee main is still there even if it is not now double track. The Passenger trains still run each way every day, even if it is now Amtrak. The Amish farms and their horses are still here pulling their buggys and their farm equipment. The CNW trains to and from Winona are also still here 4 times a week, that is 2 days each way. And the old CNW right of way is also still here, but it is now known as the La Crosse River trail. It is used by hikers, bicycles, and snow mobiles! And as for the local, if you like the older EMD non-computerized, not so high horsepower engines, while they are also still here. You just have to know when and where to look because the echoes of the things of the past, they are also still here if you know when and where to look for them!

After the traffic clears
Title:  After the traffic clears
Description:  The Soo/ CP east local from La Crosse waits in the clear. You can see the old CNW right of way which is now the La Crosse River trail on the right hand side of the picture. This was a part or section of that line which came across southern Minnesota from South Dakota. It crossed the Milwaukee double track at Tower CK, just north or west of Winona. There it is now called the DM&E and here it is a state bicycle and snow mobile trail! Notice the Amish kids with their horse and buggy on their way home from school! Their farms are located all thru the countryside near here and their handmade furniture is beautiful! I admire them because they actually live according to and by that which they say that they believe. They do not say one thing and then do something else! But one thing is for sure, I know that I could NOT live and work as they do! They say that it is a good and honest life, but it would be a hard life also! Maybe it is not to them, but it sure would be for me!

After the traffic clears
Title:  After the traffic clears
Description:  Two engines pulling, one facing east and one west. There also should be one pushing! The second engine, the one facing west will be the lead unit when this train set returns from the power plant near Portage. It will be running back empty to load at the mines in Montana and Wyoming, that is "the Great Power River basin", and then returning east once again! It is starting to get dark and the trains are moving fast.

After the traffic clears
Title:  After the traffic clears
Description:  As the radio controlled helper engine passes the local and the east siding switch, I wondered, would the dispatcher finally now be able to let the local go?! You can see the conductor still standing there, but I think that he already knew the answer that we will soon see.

After the traffic clears
Title:  After the traffic clears
Description:  Knowing that the signal would go dark when the local "cleared the block" two miles to the east, I figured that it was a good time to "pull the pin" and head home. It would NOT be a long walk, as we live right across the street, and we can see the railroad and this signal from our front door!
