another look close up |

classic NP and maybe not seen as much as were the GP7/9s. Or at least not by me! I guess it just depended upon the part of the railroad that you were seeing at the time! In other words, different engines ran in different places, and not just anywhere at any time! Different things were in different places and so there was "a taste and a flavor" to things, and that was part of the fun of it! |

To me, GN ore cars looked like ore cars because of their color and also maybe because I saw more of them than any of the others. The thing that I like about these NP ore cars is that filled with coal or sand or gravel/ ballast, they look right at home and not out of place! |

I was in the US Navy and not at home, when the world changed from that which it once was! And later when I was able to hire out on the BN in the summer of 1978 (which was 10 years after I hired out on the Milwaukee), even all of this was then gone! As were many other things also. I was glad that I was not there to see it change! |

31 cents a gallon |
Description: |
It was probably not June 10th, 1968 because that was my operators date on the Milwaukee Road and I was in La Crosse, Wisconsin taking the "rules class" with the Chief Dispatcher back in those days when there was such a person! It was a time when GP9s ran together with F7As and/ or Bs--- and when GP30s & GP35s were new! AND before I forget it was also when gas was 31cents a gallon! That must have been nice you say?! Well considering that people then maybe made 2 or 3 dollars an hour and 5 cents worth of Jelly Beans would last all day--- I suppose all things are relative! But was it better than?! Yes and No is perhaps the correct answer! |

Description: |
I remember a time when GP30s and GP35s were new! The first time that I ever saw any it was on the west end of the St Paul Union Depot! They were on a westbound Milwaukee freight train which was going either to Minneapolis and perhaps west on the H&D meaning "Hastings and Dakota" or it was waiting to follow a passenger train and then cross the Mississippi River on the joint Milwaukee/ Omaha track to the I&M meaning "Iowa and Minnesota". It was a very long time ago to remember and there was no real way for me to have known! But I do remember that trains leaving the passenger station would often see a signal that appeared as Yellow over Green which was called Approach Medium! But that was on a railroad where the signals indicated speed and not a route thru a junction or interlocking! |

after stopping at the crossing to let the conductor get off, we can see the American flag at the fire station, thus my question or comment "under freedom's flag"?! Often times, the local will stop on the east end of the siding for lunch here "in small town America"--- where one day we stopped for gas and there was a Harley and a John Deer tractor filling up! Or maybe they had only stopped for a burger and fries! Remember to take the time to stop and to enjoy the simple "everyday things" while they and/ or we are still here and still "free" and able to do so! For come tomorrow, they or we might no longer be here! |

a time in between when there was a big marroon strip and when there was not. We need to always enjoy the things that we have, because they do NOT last! One day they are there, and a few years later they are gone! |

Going by Dunn yard |
Description: |
out of St Paul and after passing Oakland tower, an eastbound CB&Q passenger train was seen racing by the east end of Dunn yard which in those days was only four tracks. The joint double track was still train orders and was left hand running. |

it's all gone now |
Description: |
faded into the dusty pages of some old history book, about which few if even that many know or care. This was from our New England colored leaves trip, when we left New London and headed north following the Central Vermont. We made it to White River Junction, it was beautiful trip! |

when there was... |
Description: |
on the Central Vermont, Yantic was the next station north of Norwich. We lived there for a short time while I was going to submarine school in New London, in that time when I was in the US Navy! Not that I wanted to be, I just simply wanted to be somewhere else much less! Those of you who remember having draft cards, will understand! |
