Album Info:The only thing about opening a time capsule and "Returning to Yesterday" is that the things that you might find there, are perhaps at best, only good for a limited number of people! As to why this might be, About these things I do not know and I can not say, except that Some people will understand and Some people will not! This is just the way it is! Some people dream a different dream--- because they have been told a different story. Thus they see things, in a different way. Some of these pictures I have not looked at or seen in over 40 years! They were taken in the middle to late 1960's by the young stallion that I once was back in those days when I was in high school or when I was working the interlocking towers on the Milwaukee Road near St Paul Yard and the St Paul Union Depot. It will take some time to review and upload the best of the several hundred pictures that there are in this collection. A special thanks to my friend Chris who works on the Amtrak desk on the mighty BNSF. Without his help and generosity, these images as he calls them would possibly not yet have been scanned, and I would not yet be uploading them, and thus not sharing them with you! Most of the dates for these pictures will be a guess or approximation of a date within the middle to late 1960's. I remember the places, but not so much the dates.

Slow Clear
Title:  Slow Clear
Description:  according to the 1967 Consolidated Code, the NP and the SP&S used speed signals compared to the GN and others which used route signals. It is two different ways of doing the same thing. The signals might have looked the same, but they did not relay nor convey the same indications or information. Thus it was very important to know upon whose railroad it was that you were operating! Notice that the lower semaphore arm is shorter than the upper one indicating that it is an indication as to speed and not a route to be used through the interlocking. Speed signals could use flashing yellows and flashing greens as where route signals did not. On some railroads, dwarf signals were slow speed signals only and on other railroads, they carried and relayed the same indications as did their much higher and taller brothers who often stood close by, if not alongside of them. One of my favorite signals appeared as flashing yellow over flashing green and was called by the name "Limited Clear Approach Medium"! So it was in those days, when different people in different places did and often dared to understand, the same things differently!

Classic NP
Title:  Classic NP
Description:  looking west at St Anthony Park or the Union Cutoff as it was later known after the interlocking tower was gone. Semaphores and wooden cabooses, I just love it! And there was not then a whole lot for computers either! "Big Brother" just did NOT know where everyone was nor what it was that they were doing! The question is, are we any better off or do we feel any safer, now that he does?!

climbing up the hill on the NP double track
Title:  climbing up the hill on the NP double track
Description:  this CB&Q transfer was observed climbing the hill out of St Paul and the Great River valley. They were heading west towards Northtown and had just passed Trout Brook Jct and Mississippi Street. Sometimes there were two engines and sometimes three, but this was typical of the way that things were done. And yes, the engines always faced west as they ran around the Twin Cities making connections with other railroads! But one day soon the inbound power from La Crosse would no longer cutoff at Daytons Bluff and the "Red Birds" as they were known would run thru as they took their trains and made their connections with Great Northern and the Northern Pacific. And my time on the Milwaukee Road would be interrupted and cut short by the period of time that I spent in the US Navy Submarine service. But I did not know that when I returned home, that it would be the beginning of 30 years as a trick dispatcher on the Burlington Northern Railroad!

Title:  3 NP Alcos now BN
Description:  I was in the US Navy and not at home, when the world changed from that which it once was! And later when I was able to hire out on the BN in the summer of 1978 (which was 10 years after I hired out on the Milwaukee), even all of this was then gone! As were many other things also. I was glad that I was not there to see it change!

cold and overcast
Title:  cold and overcast
Description:  the BN merger had arrived and the GN goat was now frozen in time! Some of us still remember, but the sad truth is that most people do not know and do not care that he even ever existed. The sleek, new streamlined "Big Sky Blue" image had lasted only a few short years and now he was fading into the pages of history. Faded but not forgotten by those of us who once knew and loved him!

in another place and time
Title:  in another place and time
Description:  When I took this picture, I was a young stallion about 23 years old and our son was 6 weeks old. I was a young sailor in the US Navy going to submarine school! I did not want to, but I did not want to be in the army in that place in SE Asia, where our underwear is now made! I'm now older than this caboose which was built in 1914 and I had no idea at the time that in about 6 and 1/2 years, I would be back home in St Paul, Minnesota going to dispatchers school on the Burlington Northern Railroad! The 2 cars in this picture are CN 546738 and BN 455990. Perhaps there are clues in life that can tell us ahead of time, where we are going and the things that we might do when we get there! At that time, I had no idea that I would retire with 30 years service as a trick dispatcher and over 40 years railroad service! When I started on the Milwaukee Road in St Paul after I hired out and took my first rules exam in La Crosse, Wisconsin--- I was only 19 years old and I had not yet a clue as to how and where that I would fit into that which James J Hill called, his great adventure!
