Description: |
"From the bridge on the other side of the engine house"--- perhaps there is more here than you might first notice!!! Is that an F3 "B" unit in the engine consist?! You can just barely make out the air tanks for the train &engine brakes on the top of the GP7/9 if you know where 2look!!! This made room 4larger fuel tanks!!! And those might even be 40ft wooden box cars--- i can't really say for sure/ this was 40 years ago, another place &time much different from 2day!!! No personal desk top computers &photo editers then!!! |

Ready For Work |
Description: |
In the minds of some people, the NP lived in the shadow of the GN. And to others, it just simply was NOT that way! Some thought that it was the "Great Northern"--- Pacific and others thought that it was the Great--- "Northern Pacific"! Was it all done and settled with the coming of the Burlington Northern merger?! Some may have though so, but to others the question is still very much alive. And so for some the debate continues! |

Milw lite engine |
Description: |
at the east end of Hoffman Avenue the signals look different than they do today, that is before ctc and before the interlocking tower was torn down! Since I once worked there, I can say that this is probably the engine hostler coming back from Minneapolis. It is very doubtful that a train crew would have been running with the engine 153 long nose first. And since they are going east on the westward freight main as the track headed out of the yard, I would say that they are going to the roundhouse. Hoffman Avenue was a busy place and still is today. That is why I liked working there, in those days! |

waiting for the block to clear |
Description: |
Having seen these engines come into Northtown where they earlier cutoff from their train, they are now waiting for a double red signal at Park Jct. This NP tower protected the crossing with the Minnesota Transfer which headed north from their yard in the Midway to meet the Soo Line at New Brighton. This light engine was heading east to Mississippi Street in St Paul. |

Extra 375 Eask |
Description: |
having arrived from the west perhaps as far as Mandan on the Yellowstone Division, here are a pair of NP road switchers with the new simplified paint scheme. Was is "classic NP"?! Not for me, no it was not! But the times they were a changing, as so it was noted in a song by Bob Dylan who was born in Duluth! Most people think or believed that the NP was double track west of the Twin Cities. But that is only partly true. Between Northtown (University Avenue) and St Cloud, it was joint double track with the GN owning the eastward track! |

Soo Line passenger engine 553 waits at Winnipeg for the return trip to Minneapolis/ St Paul! The Soo Line was really the Canadian Pacific in the USA, just as the Great Northern and the Northern Pacific jointly owned the Burlington which gave them a route to Chicago! On the Great Northern the overnight train between St Paul/ Minneapolis and Winnipeg was called "the Winnipeg Limited" and on the Soo Line it was called "the Winnipeger". On the "GN" the distance was 457 miles. |

31 cents a gallon |
Description: |
It was probably not June 10th, 1968 because that was my operators date on the Milwaukee Road and I was in La Crosse, Wisconsin taking the "rules class" with the Chief Dispatcher back in those days when there was such a person! It was a time when GP9s ran together with F7As and/ or Bs--- and when GP30s & GP35s were new! AND before I forget it was also when gas was 31cents a gallon! That must have been nice you say?! Well considering that people then maybe made 2 or 3 dollars an hour and 5 cents worth of Jelly Beans would last all day--- I suppose all things are relative! But was it better than?! Yes and No is perhaps the correct answer! |

bending the iron or if you wish reversing the switch on the NP westbound main at Soo Line Jct. The bridge heads to the St Paul freight house. How many freight houses were there in downtown St Paul? Let's count them 1) Soo Line 2) Great Northern 3) Northern Pacific 4) Chicago Great Western 5) the Omaha, not to be confused with the CNW and 6) the Milwaukee Road. The St Paul Union Depot saw passenger trains from these six plus also the Burlington and the Rock Island! |

Someone said that it was cold that day--- and i guess that just "maybe" that was true!!! i never really noticed because in those days i was a very warm blooded young buck and also part polar bear!!! You can see the Interstate highway I35 bridges being built here at Rices Point in Duluth, Minnesota on the probably frozen shore of Lake Superior!!! i doubt that there was much taconite, coal or grain being shipped on the Great Lakes at that time of year!!! You can see a NP Alco S2/4 again with an old steam engine bell!!! Rices point was the Northern Pacific yard in Duluth and 28th street was the Great Northern yard in Superior, Wisconsin |

At Shoreham Yard in Minneapolis located between Northtown on the Northern Pacific and Minneapolis Jct on the Great Northern, it looks like GP7/9's are the order of the day! I don't see much in the way of dynamic brake grids either! But look a Duluth Messabi & Iron Range engine has shown up and was a rare treat in those days before anything could be found anywhere at anytime. Things were different then when most things for the most part pretty much stayed at home. |

Somewhere out on the road |
Description: |
CV 4551 with white flags and class lamps indicating that the dispatcher had created an "extra" train. Notice the engine bell over the headlight which might be saying that they ran long nose leading. |

in the yard |
Description: |
CV 4558 switching in the yard. It seems that the Central Vermont (wearing CN green and yellow) likes to fly white flags, indicating an "extra" train that the dispatcher had created, because there was not a schedule that was useful in running the train. |
