1 purple and 5 red
Title:  1 purple and 5 red
Description:  6 units at State Street yard stand ready and waiting to be of service. Maybe the paint scheme was not fancy but perhaps it had an appeal because it was simple.

sand & fuel
Title:  sand & fuel
Description:  Everyday things as they were at that time, on the engine service tracks at Shoreham! But it would not always be Geeps and F7s--- one day they would be replaced by newer, bigger and more powerful engines!

GN 309A
Title:  GN 309A
Description:  Going west from St Paul and Westminister tower the Great Northern had a four track main line on which both the Chicago Great Western and the Chicago North Western also ran between St Paul and Minneapolis!!! At St Anthony Tower the freight mains entered the east end of Union Yard crossing over the Passenger mains on four crossing diamonds as the Passenger mains headed west thru the University of Minnesota and then crossed the Mississippi River on the Stone Arch Bridge which i believe had a curve in it on the west end going into the Passenger Station!!! West of the GN Union Yard and the Minnesota Transfer which connected with the Milwaukee Road was Minneapolis Jct which was south of the Soo Line at Shoreham and the NP at Northtown--- this is all to say that there was a lot of railroading in not really a lot of space!!! At Mpls Jct was engine GN 309A--- but as you can see from the GE U Boat on the right and the "Big Sky Blue" engine on the left--- change was coming like it or not it!!!

Coming off the Iron Range
Title:  Coming off the Iron Range
Description:  Once it was double track all the way to Gunn. At Brookston, the line to Kelly Lake and Hibbing departed from the Cass Lake main. Many train loads of wheat and other grain crops from northwestern Minnesota and North Dakota came this way to the elevators in Duluth and Superior.

Title:  SOO 2203B &554

31 cents a gallon
Title:  31 cents a gallon
Description:  It was probably not June 10th, 1968 because that was my operators date on the Milwaukee Road and I was in La Crosse, Wisconsin taking the "rules class" with the Chief Dispatcher back in those days when there was such a person! It was a time when GP9s ran together with F7As and/ or Bs--- and when GP30s & GP35s were new! AND before I forget it was also when gas was 31cents a gallon! That must have been nice you say?! Well considering that people then maybe made 2 or 3 dollars an hour and 5 cents worth of Jelly Beans would last all day--- I suppose all things are relative! But was it better than?! Yes and No is perhaps the correct answer!

B&O 4594
Title:  B&O 4594
Description:  it was a long time ago but i believe that this coal train probably just came off the P&LE and i do remember that they are going by UN Tower at the east end of New Castle yard--- i was about 15 years old maybe 16 and i spent a lot of time around the tower that summer when we went "back east" where my mom grew up!!! i did NOT know or realize that this would be a part of my training for the days when i would someday be a dispatcher on the Burlington Northern Railroad!!!

another look close up
Title:  another look close up
Description:  classic NP and maybe not seen as much as were the GP7/9s. Or at least not by me! I guess it just depended upon the part of the railroad that you were seeing at the time! In other words, different engines ran in different places, and not just anywhere at any time! Different things were in different places and so there was "a taste and a flavor" to things, and that was part of the fun of it!
