Album Info:It had been a beautiful spring day, as "the chase" that ended at Minnesota City and then with the arrival of Amtk 7 at the Winona Passenger Station came to an end, after the daylight had gone and the darkness returned once again. It all started when two DM&E trains met at Bangor East commonly called Rockland, which is located at mp 263, as it is measured from Chicago and Milwaukee. That is at the siding called Bangor on the Soo/ CP, on that which in my mind is still the old double track of the Milwaukee Road Tomah and River subdivisions. From one end to the other, "the chase" across West Central Wisconsin and then up the Minnesota side of the river valley ran for 51 miles and lasted for about five hours! A lot of our time was spent at River Jct West waiting for the westbound DM&E train that started it all, when it passed our house in Rockland almost 25 miles to the east! But that wait allowed us to see several other trains, and also we had a chance to watch the eastbound ctc signal display many different indications. Finally when the train for which we were waiting arrived, it had two more engines than we were expecting to see. It was a great time as we followed and chased this train for 28 miles up the Mississippi River valley, along the Great River Road. A lot of the pictures were taken at 55 or 60 mph!

DM&E westbound
Title:  DM&E westbound
Description:  After picking up two more engines and the cars that were with them at River Jct, you might notice that there is more smoke coming out of the rear two than the front three. We do not know for how long "the pickup" had been waiting, but once they got going it did not take long "to blow the carbon out" of the rear two!

DM&E westbound
Title:  DM&E westbound
Description:  I was not really happy about the AEI scanner being in the picture, but this is an important part of railroading as it is today. So I figured that I would take a chance and upload the picture as a colored pencil drawing! It could be debated, but I think that the effects are interesting!

Description:  It was getting later in the day than we wished, but perhaps this is still a good picture! The question here is, why is there a rear end device (Fred) sitting on the front of the engine?!
