Album Info:It was a most beautiful and sunny "Indian Summer" day, as we were leaving our home in west central Wisconsin for La Crosse and then La Crescent which is said to be the apple capital of Minnesota. This was as we headed out beginning our trip that would take us down the west bank of the Great River Valley towards Iowa! A lot but not all of the leaves had turned and fallen from the trees. We did not care as it was a nice day and wheels were turning. We were underway! We did NOT see many trains that day, and to me it did not matter. I felt this way because sometimes it is about the beauty of the land and the Great River which the railroad was following. And if there were any trains, while that is just extra! We crossed back over the Mississippi River again at Lansing because it was now much later in the day. This made for one very beautiful sunset in Lynxville!

Description:  Crossing clear, no trains. Sometimes there just are not any trains to be seen or found. Sometimes it is about the beauty of the land and the Great River which the railroad follows! If it were not for this river valley and the hills that give it life, then there would not be the towns and the farms. And then the railroad and the trains that run here, would not! This is because they would have no reason to be here or exist! Sometimes it is about more than trains! If you do not understand this, I sincerely hope that someday you will! It will all be even more wonderful and glorious then!

Description:  It looks like the frog has been pulled and the switch was straight railed sometime ago! I guess that it is just a sad fact of life, that everything that once was, does not always remain so!

Description:  Having crossed over from Iowa, we found ourselves back in Wisconsin and following "the Burlington" south between De Soto and Ferryville. We had supper in Prairie du Chien and would have liked to go to see the tunnel at East Dubuque, but it was the end of the daylight and a long drive home! Sometimes I wonder how and why places get the names that they do. Perhaps it could be an interesting thing to read and study!

Description:  Perhaps "men and equipment" are done working for the day. The derail is set against the track machines, preventing them from entering or fouling the main track. This along with the main line switch being normal and no broken rail, allows the eastward ABS signal to be display a favorable indication even if, we are not in a position to see it. There is a clear block west as an eastbound out of La Crosse approaches us, having left Minneapolis/ St Paul and the "Great Northern Pacific" earlier in the day! The changing colors of the leaves on the trees along with a few bare ones, adds a nice effect!

Description:  As the sun sets to the west and the light begins to fade, its colors are reflected in this part of the river, in the waters of pool 9, which is called Lake Winneshiek. We can begin to see the lights of Lock and Dam #9 which is located between Lynxville, Wisconsin and Harpers Ferry, Iowa. It is these many locks and dams that form these lakes within the river system, along which the railroad runs! In this case it is that which some have called "the mighty BNSF"!
